Advocacy — the practice of speaking up in support of others — has long been part of our religious tradition.  (Just ask Isaiah. Or Jesus.) And today, advocacy is so important it’s hard to see how we can promote our principles without it.

Enough Said

A “quotation” inscribed upon the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial has provoked controversy.  “I was a drum major for peace.”  Isn’t that what he said?  Isn’t it close enough?  And how important is it that we get the words exactly right?  We’ll take a look at some famous quotations: what they said; what we say they said; and what it means.

Giving Way

Give up.  Give out.  Give over.  Give in.  ‘Tis better to give, it is said…then why do so many common phrases make it sound like defeat?
